The idea to create a modern culture centre in Białystok came in 2004. I took some time to make it happen since the new building of Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic – European Art Centre opened on 28th September 2012.
The opera has its own simultaneous translations system and a TV studio. There’s also a modern multimedia system allowing large scale video projections and live online transitions of cultural events. Thanks to an audio description system, those suffering from visual impairment can also enjoy the cultural programme.
What’s interesting about the Opera and Philharmonic building is the fact that it harmonises with the surroundings really well – the grass and other plants are utilized along with tiny alleys and ponds. Altogether it’s supposed to resemble a meadow.
And if you want panoramic view of Białystok – there’s a observation terrace on the roof of the opera. There, you will also find an iron, 2-metre high sculpture called “The Head of the Composer” by Teresa Murak.
